Il brano era stato presentato in anteprima ai Billboard Music Awards 2014 che si sono tenuti il 18 maggio ed è poi stato lanciato come singolo per anticipare l'uscita dell'album "Paula" che vedrà la luce il 1 luglio.

Sia "Get Her Back" che l'intero disco ruotano intorno alla recente separazione di Robin Thicke dalla moglie Paula Patton e al desiderio del cantante di riconquistarla.

Nel video della canzone il volto del cantante si alterna alle immagini di una ragazza molto simile alla Patton e a dei messaggi che molto probabilmente i due si sono scambiati nella vita reale.
