'Piece of My Heart' in realtà fu pubblicato come singolo nel 1967 da Erma Franklin, sorella della più famosa Aretha Franklin.

La canzone però divenne famosa soltanto l'anno dopo grazie a Janis Joplin, che ne realizzò una cover in versione rock con la band californiana Big Brother and the Holding Company.
