Gwen Stefani ha diffuso il video ufficiale del suo nuovo singolo, Used to Love You che farà parte del suo nuovo album da solista senza i .

Il videoclip è stato diretto da Sophie Muller, collaboratrice di lungo corso della Stefani e dei No Doubt, per cui ha diretto i video di Don't Speak, Simple Kind of Life e Push and Shove.

Il suddetto disco sarebbe dovuto uscire qualche mese fa, ma clamorosamente la stessa cantante ha deciso di scartare tutte le canzoni che aveva realizzato per la sua ultima fatica discografica. Gwen, dopo il divorzio da Gavin Rossdale ha cestinato nell'ordine: Spark The Fire, Baby Don't Lie e le produzioni di Benny Blanco, Pharrell Williams e Calvin Harris.

In poche parole è stata una strage che la stessa Stefani ha spiegato con un ragionamento che, effettivamente, fila:

Non mi sembrava giusto e non mi sentivo soddisfatta. Quella registrazione con Benny era stata fatta in quel modo perché avevo appena partorito ed avevo iniziato a fare il giudice a The Voice e sentivo che avrei dovuto mettere qualcosa in musica, ma cosa? Non c'è stato tempo, quindi ho provato a fare un album senza non sentirmi poi tanto coinvolta, esattamente come fanno tantissime altre persone. Per me non ha funzionato.

La canzone sembrerebbe raccontare del divorzio della voce dei No Doubt da Gavin Rossdale, avvenuto lo scorso agosto dopo tredici anni di matrimonio. Sarà stato anche per questo motivo che Gwen non sentiva più sue le canzoni che ha gettato.

Ha preferito puntare su una ballata moderna ma intrisa di sofferenza e patema d'animo.

È la classica canzone che racconta di un addio alla persona amata e fa riferimento alla sensazione di incredulità che si vive passandoci: un'abitudine ad amare che Gwen porta ancora dentro di sé ed è riuscita a trasformare in musica e parole.

Il testo di questo brano ha raccontato anche la tipica illusione di chi ama e crede ancora nell'amore altrui, anche se le lacrime sono la prova della fine di una relazione e di un sentimento che dopo anni di convivenza era diventato una dolce daily routine.

La cantante a tal proposito ha aggiunto:

Ho dovuto affrontare quello che è successo per scrivere un album che avevo bisogno di scrivere. In un certo senso, ho pregato e meditato nel tentativo di essere aperta e riconoscente con questo album. Queste canzoni (scritte dala cantante stessa n.d.r.) sono naturali. Parlano sia del non preoccuparsi di ciò che è successo o di ciò che accadrà, che del vivere l'attimo, dell'essere presenti a se stessi e provare a sentire.
